How to Know If Your Hair Is Actually Growing (Real Signs Most People Miss)

Let’s be honest. When you’re trying to grow your hair, the most frustrating question is:

“Is it actually growing… or am I just imagining it?”

I’ve been there. I don’t use fancy routines. Genetically, my hair grows well. I mostly focus on clean diet, simple oils like rosemary, castor, and almond oil — and consistency.

But even then, I used to constantly wonder:

Is this real growth… or just less breakage?

So here are the real signs your hair is actually growing — without guessing.

(I’m not a doctor. This is based on research + what I’ve personally observed during my own hair journey.)

You See Baby Hairs Around Your Hairline

Look closely near:

  • Your forehead
  • Temples
  • Side edges

If you see small, soft, short hairs — that’s usually new growth.

If they are rough and uneven, that’s breakage.

Soft + thin + upright = new growth.

Your Roots Feel Slightly Thicker

Even if your length looks the same, your roots can tell a different story.

If your hair feels:

  • Less flat near scalp
  • Slightly fuller at the crown
  • Stronger when you tie a ponytail

That’s often a sign your growth phase is active.

Most people only check ends — but growth starts at the scalp.

Your Hair Looks Healthier at the Top

When new hair grows, the top 2–3 cm often looks:

  • Shinier
  • Less damaged
  • Smoother

Because it’s fresh hair. Compare your current roots to old photos if possible.

You Notice Less Breakage

Here’s something important:

Sometimes hair is growing…
But breaking at the same speed.

So you never “see” length.

If you now notice:

  • Less tiny snapped strands
  • Less hair on pillow
  • Less hair in comb

That means your hair is retaining length better.
Length retention = visible growth over time.

Your Parting Looks Slightly Fuller

If your middle part or side part looks less wide than before, that’s a strong sign of regrowth or reduced thinning.

Take monthly pictures in the same lighting to track this.

Hair Growth vs Hair Retention (The Truth)

Hair grows from the scalp. But whether you SEE it depends on:

  • Breakage
  • Split ends
  • Heat damage
  • Scalp health

You can grow hair and still not see length if it keeps breaking. That’s why scalp care matters.

What I Personally Do to Support Growth

I mostly keep things simple:

  • Clean diet
  • Regular oiling (not daily)
  • Gentle washing
  • No aggressive brushing

Recently, instead of heavy oil every day, I started using a lightweight serum a few times a week just to support scalp health without clogging it.

The one I chose is:

👉 Be Bodywise Hair Growth Serum Roll-On

Why I prefer this one:

  • Easy roll-on application
  • Lightweight (doesn’t feel sticky)
  • Doesn’t make scalp greasy
  • Easy to stay consistent with

I use it 3–4 times a week and gently massage for 2–3 minutes.

Not magic.
Not overnight growth.
And honestly, consistency is what matters most

How Long Does Real Hair Growth Take?

On average:

Hair grows about 1–1.5 cm per month. That means real visible difference usually appears after 8–12 weeks minimum.

Anything promising extreme growth in 2 weeks is unrealistic.

When to Be Concerned

If you notice:

  • Sudden heavy shedding for 3+ months
  • Bald patches
  • Severe itching or scalp inflammation

It’s better to consult a dermatologist.

Sometimes hair concerns are internal, not external.

Final Thoughts

If you’re trying to grow your hair, stop checking every week.

Instead:

  • Track monthly
  • Take pictures
  • Focus on scalp health
  • Reduce breakage

Small signs appear before length becomes obvious.

Growth is slow.
But consistency wins.
